PEER TEACHING ASSIGNMENT:
optical devices

Students in groups of 2 (or 1) will study various aspects of an optical device.

TOPICS (pick one):
  • The eye: normal operation
  • The eye: corrective procedures (such as eye glasses, laser eye surgery, cataract treatment etc)
  • Camera (conventional or digital)
  • Microscope *
  • Binocular
  • Telescope
  • Holograms
  • Lasers *
  • Projector
  • Fibre optics *
  • Flat screen TV
  • Conventional TV (Cathode Ray Tube or CRT)
  • other optical device or technology

    CONTENT:
    The focus of your study should be: "How does it work?"    . Include the following information:
  • Structure/construction of device
  • Sketch showing path of light through device.
  • How does it work? (in considerable detail, referring specifically to properties of light such as reflection, refraction, or critical angle)
  • Problems, special features or latest developments of the device.



  • THE PROJECT WILL INVOLVE TWO ELEMENTS:
  • VISUAL AID / DISPLAY / PHOTOCOPIED HANDOUT:
    This will focus on providing information on the technical aspects of the type of optical device and may include a one-page handout (photocopied for the class) or a labelled poster.   A ray diagram (which you are able to explain) is required.   An actual model or example of your optical device is alway helpful.

    This visual display is intended to accompany a brief (5 - 10 minute) "sharing session" involving how the optical device works.   Avoid excessive reading, please!

  • EXPLANATION IN A "SHARING SESSION:"
    This will not be a "presentation" as such, but we will arrange our desks in a circle and we will "share" our major results in a conversational style.   This may take 1 or 2 periods as required.
