Make your own free website on
Physicists and their Discoveries

Your task:

1.         Read the points in the website “Death by Powerpoint” (

2.         You must incorporate these suggestions in to your presentation.  (except for the use of the remote control to advance your slides)

3.         Sign up for a physicist from the list provided.  You may work with a partner, or individually.   All the physicist’s discoveries relate to “modern physics” which refers to discoveries made after 1900.

4.         Prepare a PowerPoint presentation on the physicist ensuring that you adhere the guidelines of an excellent presentation.   (the presentation will be at most 10 - 15 minutes long).  No reading from notes or prepared cue cards will be allowed.   Also, no reading of sentences from the PowerPoint slides will be allowed, although you may refer to your point form list

Provide the following information

  • Date of birth and death
  • Very brief biographical information, focusing on where he / she was educated
  • If available,  where did he / she became interested in science  (family background?)
  • Where the discoveries were made and the approximate age of the physicist a that time *
  • Major discovery or discoveries made by him / her.   Explain these in the simplest possible terms, keeping in mind that most of your audience has little or no knowledge of modern physics.
  • What was the impact of the discover on the world of physic or on mankind.   Did it lead to further discoveries or the development of some useful product?

*  PUZZLING FACT:     In history, most discoveries in physics were made by men in their early 20s.   The reasons for this are not clear.   Any discoveries made by men in their 30s or 40s were actually originated when that person was in his early 20s.

 5.        Ensure that you have provided a Cited References page.
