Oral Defence Interview Questions (SNC 1D/IB)

Remember...

Each group member will be responsible for answering 3 of these questions during your group interview.  Keep that in mind as you develop your answers. You must be able to provide an insightful response to each question and refer to your lab report in a positive manner. You will need to bring 4 copies of your lab report to the oral defence interview: one for each of the panel members and one for yourselves.

1.     Explain the nature of the problem.

2.     During your group brainstorm, what were the variables that came up as possible things you could study?

3.     What is an independent variable?  What was the I.V. in your experiment?

4.     What is a dependent variable?  What was the D.V. in your experiment?

5.     What are the characteristics of a good hypothesis statement?  What was your group’s hypothesis statement?

6.     What variables did your group have to keep constant?  Why is this an important part of scientific investigation?

7.     Define the term “control”.  Why is a control important?  What did your group use as the control in this investigation?

8.     Describe any trends or patterns you noticed in your results.

1.     What was your summary statement?  Explain why you were able to come to this conclusion.

2.     Discuss the factors that your group identified that may have contributed to experimental error.

3.     What sources of background research did you investigate and what did you find?

4.     What new studies or avenues of investigation could be pursued to learn more about this problem?

                     Oral Defense Instructions (SNC 1D/IB)

1.                  Decide what a good answer looks like for each question.

2.                  Practice your oral responses.  Peer and self assess your work to polish your defense.

3.                  Remember, you will not know which of these questions you will have to answer.

4.                  Be prepared to put in the time with your group to finish the poster presentation and prepare the oral defense.  This time investment is the same you would make to study for a formal, written exam.

5.                  Be prepared to submit a peer assessment of yourself and your group members performance during the final performance period.  This will be turned in individually to the judges during the oral defense.
