Why is it important for students to become skilled in writing technical reports?   Dr. Dave Cooper, professor of chemical engineering at Lakehead University offers these comments to his engineering students.   These comments also apply to professionals working in other scientific and technical fields.
As a professional in the chemical engineering industry, you are likely at some time to be called on to present a technical report on some aspect of your work.

You will find this work will be judged, not only on the technical competence that you show in doing it, but also in how effectively you present the results. For this reason it is very important for you to learn how to present your work in a clear, concise manner so that you may attain maximum effectiveness in your job.

By far the most common form of presenting scientific work is the written technical report. This is the form of report used in almost all scientific journals. At first you will likely find it difficult to write in this format and to decide what information belongs in each section. As you practice writing and reading this type of report, you will develop a feeling for the most effective way to present your work and so will be able to modify the basic form of the report to attain this end.

At all times remember that your ultimate aim is to present your ideas as effectively as possible. To be effective you must present your work in a clear, concise, and logically complete manner.
