TO:           Grade 10 Science Students
FROM:     Mr. Koivu

All grade 10 Pre-IB and academic science students at Churchill must complete a science fair project as part of their regular course work.   This project is worth 10% of your overall mark and could be regarded as a culminating activity.   Here is a summary of the science fair information which has been discussed in class.

YOUR PROPOSAL   (when finalized and discussed with me and other science teachers) should be submitted to me in writing
no later than Friday, November 8th. Students who do not provide a proposed science fair topic on that date will receive a comment on their mid-term report card.

"Cindy-Lou has not yet submitted a proposed topic for her grade 10 science fair project, worth 10% of her final mark."

Proposal should include a very brief description of the experiment and the hypothesis, including the dependent and independent variables.   Be sure to give thought to the practical aspects of the experiment: Can I obtain the materials? (plants, chemicals, water bugs...) How will I take the actual measurements?

Please note that this is just a proposal which may be modified as you go along, depending on how your experiment works out.

DUE DATE:   The final due dates for the project are:

Monday, December 9, 2013   Students must provide evidence to Mr. K. that they have started their experimentation and have collected data. Please note that the experiments need not be completed; just that it is under way.

Wednesday, January 15, 2014   (for Semester I classes).   Projects due during your regular science class. The projects will not be presented but will be viewed by your fellow students.

Your projects must be stored until March 2014 for the SWC science fair. You may leave them in room 209 until then if you wish.

GROUP SIZE:
You may work in groups of 2.   If you must, you may partner with a grade 10 Pre-IB student from the semester II class, although the semester I due date must be met.  Groups of 3 will not be permitted.

PICKING A TOPIC:
Here are a few suggestions when you select a topic:
  1. The most important requirement is that there are only TWO variables being studied.   One is the variable which is being changed (independent variable) and the other is the variable which is being measured. (dependent variable)
  2. It is more fun to select a topic in which you have an personal interest such as hobby or favourite sport.
  3. Select a topic using materials which are readily available, either from your home or from supplies at school.
  4. Remember, you must actually perform an experiment and collect data for your science fair project.
  5. Check out these science fair links.   Don't copy the suggested topics exactly but you may modify the experiment to make the topic your own.   Your experiment must show some originality to receive a good mark.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:
The Science Fair Display
The display involves information presented in a poster form or on a 3-fold cardboard display board.   Present enough information so the viewer can get an idea of what was done.   Don't present ALL the detail would normally appear in a major lab report.   For this project, I do not need to see a separate lab report; just the display will be marked.

If convenient and if it will add to your presentation, the equipment used may also be arranged on a desk in front of the display board. Otherwise, digital camera pictures of your project will be fine.

Include:
-a large title of project
-attractive graphics such as pictures or drawings of the experiment
-a very brief introduction of background information
-hypothesis
-a very brief summary of method
-somewhat more information on an explanation of result
-graphs or tables of data

The evaluation sheet used for marking the science fair display has been handed out to all grade 10 students.   Click here to see the summary of the marking scheme.   Please refer to the paper copy of the "science fair judge's sheet".

NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO REGIONAL SCIENCE FAIR 2008:
Dates will be announced by the science fair committee soon.   It is always held during the first week of April each year.   Winners then to the Canada-wide science fair which is held during the first week of May each year.   Check out the 2007 Northwestern Ontario Regional Science Fair website for more information.

An additional comment on science fair at Churchill C. & V.I.
Each year, Churchill C & VI does very well at this event and wins many of the high school categories. Churchill students usually are invited to attend the Canada-wide Science Fair.   Several years ago, a Churchill student went to the nationals and was invited to the World Science Fair in Australia.

This year, Churchill will be sending our 20 best science fair projects to the NWO event.   Participation in the regional event is voluntary, but students with really good projects will be strongly encouraged to attend.
